JAMES BROWN
1933-2006
My eyes and ears have seen and heard numerous music legends....James Brown was oneof them. Hearing of his death Christmas morning saddened and kindle memories.
I was fortunate to have seen James Brown perform on five occasions.
His band was tight, interaction of guitar, bass and drums, pocket grooves and space were essential ingredients "The Godfather of Soul" relied on.
Guitarist Jimmy Nolen's brisk 16Th note strum riffs, and funk grooves, Bernard Odum, Tim Drummond ( The only white musician to tour with JB ), Charles Sherrell, Bootsy Collins,
pulsating bass lines, Clyde Stubblefield, Melvin Parker, Jabo Starks, "fatback" rhythmic drum licks fueled JB's shimmying dance moves.
James Brown was one of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He won a Grammy for life-time achievement in 1992 as well as Grammys in 1965 for "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" ( best R&B recording ) and for "Living In America" in 1987 ( best R&B vocal performance male ).
"The Godfather of Soul" influenced generations of musicians from rock to rap.
He was a dynamic energetic performer who gave you his all until there wasn't anymore, and than some!
His "Live At The Apollo" in 1962 is considered one of the greatest concerts ever recorded....an essential must have!
JB thanks for the "Funky Good Times".... and thanks for teaching!
Kindness, joy, love, and happiness to all of you until next time!
Ralph Brown, Jr.
